UTC Leeds is a specialist college dedicated to the study of engineering and advanced technologies. As such it offers the highest quality science, technology, engineering and maths courses with state-of-the-art equipment, combined with exceptional levels of employer-based activities.

What qualifications will you gain?

You will study for AQA Tech-levels in Engineering (Foundation; Engineering Design; Mechatronics) which have been developed with leading employers, education providers and professional bodies including the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) who fully endorse them. They are designed to teach the transferable skills that employers and higher educaton providers say are critical to successful progression, as well as core engineering knowledge.

Which course you take will depend on your interests and the direction in which you wish to progress beyond the UTC, whether to further study at university, a high quality apprenticeship or straight into a professional job.

What will the course options cover?

AQA Foundation Tech-level in Engineering

This offers an introduction to engineering worth one A Level and covers:

  • Materials technology and science
  • Mechanical systems
  • Engineering design
  • Production and manfufacturing

AQA Tech-level in Engineering Design

Design is at the heart of the engineering process, calling for imagination, creativity, the knowledge and application of technical and scientific skills and the skillful use of materials. The teaching of design has an integral place in the formation of all engineers. Design engineers help to conceive and create everything from the latest iPhone to prosthetic limbs to offshore drilling components. This qualification gives learners the opportunity to develop specialist design skills and the ability to apply them to an engineering sector of their choice by studying:

  • Modern design use of computer-aided design procedures for engineering to produce 3D models and 2D drawings, including the use of rendering and animation in their designs
  • The systematic approaches to design such as design for manufacture (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA)

You can study this course as one or two A Level equivalents. It consists of eight units:

  1. Materials Technology and Science
  2. Mechanical Systems
  3. Mathematics for Engineers
  4. Engineering Design
  5. Production and Manufacturing
  6. Design Visualisation
  7. Advanced Design for Manufacture
  8. Design Engineer Project Management

AQA Tech-level in Mechatronics

Mechatronics represents the interface between mechanical and electrical engineering and the use of programmable computers and control systems. This course will provide you with the opportunity to develop and understand the technologies and core skills that underpin mechatronics:  investigation, design, construction, testing and project skills. You will develop key industry competencies such as fault-finding, diagnosis and resolution, logic, computational thinking and the transferability of knowledge and understanding from system areas.

You can study this course as one or two A Level equivalents (Double Mechatronics). It consists of eight units:

  1. Materials Technology and Science.
  2. Mechanical Systems
  3. Mathematics for Engineers
  4. Engineering Design
  5. Production and Manufacturing
  6. Mechatronic Project Management
  7. Mechatronic Control Systems
  8. Programming for Engineers

What kind of project work will you do?

A key part of studying at a UTC is working on projects related to the world of work which have been set by employers or university partners. Here are just a sample of the kind of projects you could be doing:

  • Engineering design - Use the latest Autodesk Fusion 360 to Design an F1 style steering wheel in one of our CAD suites.
  • Mechanical systems - Use the VEX IQ robotics kit to build a solution to your exam board brief in one of our maker spaces.
  • Programming for engineers - Use our industry standard equipment to learn to program PLC's in one of our automation rooms.
  • Control for engineers - Use industry standard equipment to learn how to program in one of our automation rooms.
  • Design visualisation -  Use the latest Autodesk Fusion 360 3D CAD software in one of our CAD suites.
  • Design for manufacture and assembly - Use the latest Autodesk Fusion 360 3D CAD software in one of our CAD suites
  • Production and manufacture – Work together in factory manufacturing cells to produce a number of components that all fit together and become a batch of 20 products.

How will you be assessed?

The AQA Tech-levels in Engineering are assessed in two ways:

  • Some units are assessed internally by tasks or assignments developed at the UTC
  • Some units are assessed through exams or tasks set and marked by AQA
